Media Servers

Guest Post By: Sammie P.
Years ago the PC was the primary place to download music and videos. Over the past few years this has changed dramatically. Current technology has made it possible for people to access the Internet over virtually any type of mobile device. With advances in mobile technology came advances in software that drives these devices, which created a boom in the development and implementation of media servers. The use of media servers allows a user to listen to music, watch videos, and even conduct video conferences.

Media servers are not complex devices; they are simply a computer, hard drive, and a good connection to the Internet. Many people think that a media server is something that only big companies use, but the truth is that anybody can set one up. If you have a website and you want to provide visitors with audio and video options, you should have a media server hooked up to your website. What makes a good media server is the software. It has to allow thousands of people to connect at the same time.

In a business environment this is critical for video conferences, presentations, and even email. You also need to be able to allow access by any type of mobile device, and that is where media servers really prove their worth. With the advances in technology, more and more of us are using mobile devices to access email, chat rooms, social groups, and business needs. Media servers allow all of these functions to come together in a seamless environment. They can be set up for large corporate environments or for simple home use. They can be built for a few hundred dollars, or several thousand; it simply depends on what your needs are.
